Double Dose of Fireworks in Nelson…

….this weekend it was.Photo below was taken 7.5km away.

DSCN2667

There was the official opening of the 2011 – 2012 speedway season out at Tahuna Beach Holiday Park Top of the South Speedway at Lower Richmond.

30-10-2011 fleet fireworks

Last Friday night was the traditional start to the Blessing of the Fleet celebrations I talked about here a few days ago.

I couldn’t make that one, but the Nelson Mail covered it with a photo on Saturdays front page.

With the 5th November coinciding with Saturday next weekend, it may just be one that the local cats, dogs and chickens won’t forget in a hurry.

New Zealands Cycle Trail is definitely…..

taking shape.

There’s a bit of New Zealand history here too. That being the new cycle route pretty much follows the path of New Zealands first railway line….

Witness yet another additional contribution from the “Top of the South”….and you can encounter it …right here!

Guess who made TVOne News tonight….?

Ok, another chance….spot the name about to be spelled out in the blue box at top left of screen….

C360_2011-10-2818-57-23

….now what could come next……….?

C360_2011-10-2818-57-50

Yep …… my photo did.make it.

DSCN2554

and here below it is……above

DSCN2559 (Custom)

…and here in the flesh so to speak

As I mentioned last night on Nelson Real Estate, it t’was the most excellent sunset of the year in my personal opinion.

And I attempted to prefice that by stating the “sunbeam factor.”

C360_2011-10-2719-59-35

Weirdly enough about 60 seconds before I got the real camera out….I snapped this with the i9000 and in hindsight it shows at best (albeit….unfortunately in a too small  frame size) the beautiful moment that I was trying / attempting to capture.

Last night, I thought afterwards that I’d quickly check back on the various webcams that I have linked on Nelson Real Estate…and guess what?

It turned out that verification of the fabulous vistas I was experiencing….well…this time…..it turns out that they couldn’t help.

It would seem they are more attuned to wintertime sunsets,

Probably my current favourite photo of….

Port Nelson_o

Port Nelson.

Blessing of the Fleet is this Saturday

The Blessing is an annual commemorative service is for the families of those who have lost loved ones at sea and a reminder to the public, not only to the role the fishing industry in our community, but also to the often dangerous conditions & weather endured at sea by these mariners.

DSCN2298

Most of the official duties will take place at the Mariners monument down on the Quay….

DSCN2325

….in sight of the many vessels that come into Port, and that go back out to the Ocean.

The 2011 Blessing of the Fishing Fleet was originally scheduled for July 23, but because the Nelson City Council was conducting works along the foreshore,

DSCN1993

it was decided to postpone the Blessing til this Saturday, the 29th Oct 2011.

When it rains over the whole country

R0017227

you can be rest assured that there is one part where the sun still shines!

Any chance of work in Nelson for a …

DSCN1782

specialist in sails or yacht rigging…..hmmm “don’t know?” But know one thing…there’s tons of inventory at Port Nelson.

Ex NZ Prime Minister has hand in Allblack salute

The local paper, the Nelson Mail reports that;

Nelson artist Anne Rush and her sister, Jenny Shipley, former prime minister of New Zealand, dressed the sculpture before last Sunday's semifinal

They also couldn’t help but draw a parallel with the stance of the Seafarers Memorial bearing ….

DSCN1996

…a resemblance to the infamous photo of Piri Weepu that has been doing the rounds of the internet.

Full story here; Seafarers sculpture is backing black

Can I count the reasons why….

I just love living here….lets see…I’ve just got home from work….and instead of the neighbours fence….all I can see is this!

DSCN1990

to the west…hmmm one

DSCN1963

two, towards the west south west….

DSCN1986

three…south westerly….

DSCN1947

four…..north west north…..

DSCN1957

five….same….

DSCN1961

and that’s just in the one night!

DSCN1981

Thursday night actually.

Although you can’t normally see it…..

DSCN1940

when I looked out this morning…..I saw this white light/house on a hill in the far distance…

DSCN1943

…thought I would try out a Nikon 36x optical zoom, just to see what it can do. And yes it did help.

To my way of thinking it appears to be a forestry lookout….maybe someone out there knows more than me and can enlighten us.

The Hills are alive…

with life giving water (well ok, actually still in the form of snow)…

DSCN1946

but with temperatures like today…..that’s not going to last for long now.

Bit of dredging going on

DSCN1886

seems to happen on a semi annual basis in Australasia's busiest fishing port.

Mist…

DSCN1902

in its own way its quite neat. Couldn’t breath without the ole Photosynthesis could we?

Thats Blind Channel in the foreground…and some lifestyler properties over Mapua way in the distance.

Guess what’s happening in Nelson this week…

R0017237

Yes it looks like you were correct, the 2011 South Island Masters Games.

Looks like friends of those Crazy Knitters…

DSCN1839

have visited the Early Settlers Memorial down at Wakefield Quay and left their touch.

Campervan City aka…

R0017210

Nelson City. Sure are lots of them on the roads currently. One thing I do find disconcerting is them just pulling up, & parking in the middle of the Main St, in the middle of the day.

Sunday, October 16, 2011

The people of Stoke and Nelson wish to extend…

C360_2011-10-1609-02-40

a warm, sunny big hand today, on this special day to the Allblacks & their RWC2011 semi-final game tonight.

Shes done her bit…

DSCN1380

under challenging circumstances ….

DSCN1393

….much extra (ex Chch happenings) capacity surprised her…..

DSCN1386

…..but boy didn’t she ….

C360_2011-10-0809-09-31

do it well.

DSCN1382

And all local Nelsonians will benefit from Trafalgar Parks advances…..

DSCN1392

…..tis certainly pertinent that all this is in view of the home of one of the teams that played in the incredibly successful re-enactment game,

DSCN1389

……Nelson College up there on the hill behind our town….and contrasting that…

DSCN1391

…..in the foreground…the official home of NZ’s Oldest Rugby club…Nelson!

Guy Fawkes coming up…

DSCN1451

Nov 5 right? Prob is that I think there are council regulations re fires on the beach? And here I also suggest that being in line with the direct “flight path” for most Air NZ flights into Nelson may mean your cute little bonfire is gonna be challenged to meet with official approval?

Couple of Kayakers inspecting

the lighthouse while another large ship steams towards Port Nelson behind them.

Nelson’s “Back Beach”….

DSCN1471

is the heart of any dog owning Nelsonian’s weekend…..

DSCN1474

…..not forgetting the seaside fishermen….and its…..

DSCN1461

…..not hard to see why is it?

Tuesday, October 11, 2011

In case you’re wondering…

DSCN1442

this ‘ere is our world famous in Nelson “Tahunanui Beach” (in a sort of “behind the scenes” way)

DSCN1447

well actually the area between the road….and seashore….

DSCN1448

…some are seeking solitude at this time of the morning on our beach…whilst others….

DSCN1458

just enjoy the space, the sun, and the moment with their four legged friends….

DSCN1440

but as you can see some scupltures have invaded the zone.

DSCN1439

Actually they have been there quite a while now

DSCN1438

and do indeed add a contrast, an Avant-garde to the omnipresent nature …….

DSCN1436

that surrounds them.
