No. 3 soon to be alive

Last year Port Nelson indicated they were concerned about current ship – to - dockside capacity, in the unlikely event of a prolonged maintenance issue effecting one of the two current dockside cranes.

……….and just as importantly, concerns about the maintenance costs on those 2 existing Port Nelson Liehberr container cranes, and decided that a board decision needed to be made to alleviate that.

That board decision amounted to spending the not too small amount of $6m on an extra container capable dockside crane, an upgraded model, the Liebherr LHM 550 mobile harbour crane was selected, with a maximum lifting capacity of 104 tonnes.

Although originally proposed to arrive in April, it does indeed look like from these photos taken today, she is now well & truly here ….and is currently occupied, with the able assistance of the other two older Liehberr cranes, in getting herself together, for active duty.

At the time, back in late 2010, the Nelson Mail reported that;

Port Nelson bought its first LHM 400 unit in 1996, followed by a second in 2000.

….and quoted Pacifica's GM of Shipping Steve Chapman as saying;

"Providing the Nelson region with more capacity and offering more shipping options can only be good for manufacturers and producers seeking timely and cost-effective transport options, not just for local markets but global markets as well,"

Got to be great news for all local Nelson & Golden Bay exporters.

Although unfortunately the Port hasn’t yet got their webmaster to update their site here…..http://cargo.portnelson.co.nz/cargo_services/plant_equipment.asp

And while I’m at it, looks like other things are on the up too, with the Port adding to its tally of near on 30 forklifts……by taking delivery of an extra two monster 40 Ton capacity Hyster forklifts this month as well.
